When people visit Africa, they want to see unbridled natural beauty. The kind of beauty that exists without explanation and in duplication or reference to it, only sort of diminishes it.
At about six o'clock, all the crew members started rushing out to the dock, cameras in hand. A strong golden glow was cast upon the side of the ship, all faces illuminated. The sky was very dark and the sea was grey with it. Turn the corner, however, and the sun was dipping into the ocean, a bright burning ball of fire moving along a cloudless strip of sky. Over one hundred people stood there in silence, silhouetted and overwhelmed by its light.
In describing Africa, Paul Theroux says in Sunrise with Seamonsters that a picture is worth a thousand words, but only a thousand. So while I have photos of it, they do not do it justice.
